How to get Settlers 2 to run on Vista

Settlers 2. what a great game! if only it worked on Vista… well guess what it can

Here is a step by step guide to get it running.

1) Download DOSBox from here

2) Run the DOSBox installer

    3) Now your at the DOSBox prompt you need to do a couple of commands before your up and running3a) My Settlers 2 folder is in my D:\games\settlers ( I dont think DOSBox likes really deep directories so keep them under 255 chars long) a location like above is perfect

3b) So I first have to type “mount d d:\” press enter without the quotes

3c) Then I type “d:” without the quotes press enter

3d) Then I type “cd games” without the quotes press enter

3e) Then I type “cd se” without the quotes HIT the Tab key to tab complete the directory name and press enter

3f) You are now in the settlers directory – type “s2″ without the quotes press enter

And your done! Enjoy!

    Hi Robert

Thanks for the instructions. I downloaded DOS Box and followed the instructions up to 3f) but nothing happened when I’d completed them. Do I need to do anything else for it to work? I’ve tried running the application from the CD and from my D: Drive, but it just doesn’t work. Can you help me to get it running as I’d love to play the game again!

    Cheers!

    No problem Paul,

so im guessing you got the cd to mount using dos box hence you were able to navigate to the settlers directory on the cd. Have you tried copying the contents of the settlers CD to say your hard drive maybe c:\settlers\ – then go through the instructions again but this time do them for the newly created directory with your copy of the settlers cd. let me know how you get on. Rob

    Hi Rob

Thanks for the advice. I still can’t get it to run (probably down to my poor computer knowledge.) I can get as far as creating the directory so in the DOS box it says C:/GAMES/SETTLE~1/ When I type in s2 though, it says “illegal command” and then randomly runs through the rest of the folder contents. Nothing else happens though. Do I need to do anything else to get the game to start?

Sorry to be a pain – I just really want too play this amazing game again.

    Cheers!

No pain at all, it is a wicked game and im glad to help. Have you tried using windows to copy the contents of the settlers cd into a new directory such as c:\s2\ then mounting c:\s2 in dos box instead? – im on msn: robbrad182@hotmail.com if you want me to talk you through a few things we can try.

Hi Robert, nice to see that enthusiasts for this great game still exist. I remember going through all of that ages ago to run Settlers, but finding that I couldn’t get the level editor to work at all. Have you managed to do so or tried to do so?

  9. November 8th, 2008 at 09:33 | #9

ES, iv just fired up dos box and the editor works. Used it the same way as discibed above but this time I used s2edit.exe instead of s2. One thing i had to do though was create a worlds directory in my settlers2 folder so i could save my maps. hope this helps

ok great i got it to install and run in dosbox but it will only run in dosbox not as a normal programme on the laptop. thats fine but i only have a small dosbox to play it in, is there any way to maximise the dosbox?

    To run DOSBox in fullscreen:

    While in DOSBox:

    Press Alt+Enter keys

Press Alt+Enter keys again to get out of full screen
type exit to get out of shell

Hello! Thank you very much for the instruction. It almost works in my case. The only problem is that the game freezes from time to time. It helps when i press ctrl+alt+del. Is there any solution for that? Any patch? I have Vista-32 and a Toshiba notebook with GeForce 7300.

    Hey Robert.

I have a problem.. I have the orginal settler2 cd and i just copied everything manually to my Hard drive. I also follow your inscrutions but everytime i want to play i have to run the setup and install the game (fair enough) However. When i want to play it i have to install it all over again and then lose my save games..etc.. so everytime i close DOSbox and when i want to play another time, i have to start on 2 world again, so i cant really proseed in the game without having it running 24/7 =/

Do you have a solution for this issue or is it just something i have to live with?

    Thx

    To install:
Mount the install target drive and your CD drive.
Change to your CD-ROM drive by typing the appropriate drive letter. (For example D: if your CD-ROM drive is drive D.)
Change to the S2 directory by typing: CD\S2.
    Type Install and press Enter.

    (Edited from S2 Manual)

Hope this helps people who need help installing using DOSBox

    Hi..
I have a problem with The settlers 2 gold edition.
    I have a Geforce 9800 gtx+
And its running on Vista 32bit
When im trying to install settlers 2, i get a messege:
    E:/S2/SETUP.EXE
This system does not support fullscreen mode.Choose ‘Close’to terminate the application.
So i tried to start it with dosbox. But im not familiar with dosbox, and all the discriptions on the internet tells me to open the game in dosbox with c:/games/settlers. I tried to unzip the game manual, and unzipped it in D:/BLUEBYTE/SETTLER2
Anyway..i know its possible to open it with dosbox..but i don’t know how to open the setup in dosbox when its in the folder D:/BLUEBYTE/SETTLER2
Please help me..so i can play this nice game again:)
    (sorry for the bad english)
